Cambodia Global Citizenship Program

Challenge Snapshot

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

ONE OF THE MAJOR CHALLENGES IN CAMBODIA IS THE LACK OF ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION, HINDERING PEOPLE FROM ACQUIRING THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR EMPLOYMENT AND BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY.

The Cambodian government provides only half a day of free education at the primary school level. To receive a full day of education, children must attend supplementary classes, which require payment. For families living at or below the poverty line, this expense is unaffordable, resulting in limited educational opportunities for children from these communities.

Since 2013, Challenges Abroad and FutureSense Foundation have supported a supplementary education centre in Battambang, which would have otherwise closed without our support! Through this centre, we are able to provide children in the community with free supplementary education classes…

This is where you come in!

It’s amazing to see how the playground we built and the English and STEM skills we taught can make such a visible difference in the lives of these kids and their community, but the impact these little legends had on me, with their constant smiles, resourcefulness and eagerness to learn, will change the way I tackle life forever
Andrew Mair
Without fail, every day all of our students ran up to us with the biggest smiles, open arms and their books in their hands ready to learn. These moments, coupled with the biggest goodbye hugs not only made me so excited to go to school everyday but also made my heart so full.

When I signed up to this trip, I though I was signing up to teach. Now I realise I have learnt just as much, as well as learning the importance of being a Global Citizen. It's easy to take a blind eye to the disparities around us but it takes courage and empathy to be aware of and understand the wider world.
Brooke Marcinkowski
Definitely the hardest and most rewarding 3 weeks of my life. I've learnt to be grateful for everything that we have in Australia, because there are kids that don't have the educational opportunities we all take for granted. Massive thank you to all the people of Cambodia for being so kind, the friends I've made along this trip and to Challenges Abroad for making this experience possible.
Andrew Mudgway
To say my trip was an amazing experience would be a serious understatement. I learnt so much about the world and about myself through my time in Cambodia and I will never forget the generosity and spirit of the people I met along the way.
Celine Chong
The month we spent in Cambodia was beyond amazing both personally and as a group. The time spent in the community working was by far the most rewarding and humbling experience of my life. I can't wait to come back to Cambodia to see the amazing people, and hopefully help further develop areas of their lives such as medical care and education.
